The most common Questions I get when asked about a mattress
I have decided to run this blog as a Q&A. I have tried to answers as best as I can. As always, if there is a question that I have missed that you wanted answered feel free to give Fully Activated Osteopathy in Hoppers Crossing a call on 0413 078 633
Hard V Soft?
Always a tough question. Ultimately everyone is different. Different sizes, body shapes and sleeping positions. At the end of the day, it is all about whether you are straight on a mattress. I have discussed ways to look for deviations in your posture while you sleep in a previous blog. If you would like more information, click here.
Pillow toppers yay or nay?
Pillow toppers are purely a comfort accessory. And yes, I find them comfortable too. Does this make them bad? No not really. But one of the key things to note is that pillow toppers that are built into bed effectively half your mattress life span. Pillow toppers are a small layer of foam on top of the bed. We spend approximately 8 hours a night on it. Over time the foam compresses and creates a bend in your spine. If we didn’t have this comfort accessory on top of our bed, we could flip it over and get a whole extra lifespan out of our mattress. This is not an option for most bed with a pillow top inbuilt into it as they aren’t allowed to be flipped. I have never seen a pillow top last longer than 5 years. So, what is the solution for that extra bit of comfort? That easy. Nowadays we can pick up attachable pillow tops or mattress toppers for relatively cheap. Or if you are looking for a bit more quality you can try a body hugger – this is the one that I use personally. (https://www.the-pillow.com.au/mattress-overlay-toppers/body_huggar_more). The best thing about these are when they have reached there used by date and no longer provide us with support – we just replace the mattress topper and hence the bed will still (hopefully) be in relatively good condition.
How often should I flip or spin my mattress?
Firstly, you need to work out if your mattress can be flipped! Check your instructions. If you have a mattress with an inbuilt pillow top, chances are this cannot be flipped. However, you want to be flipping your mattress or spinning your mattress approximately every 12 weeks. I spin mine my mattress on first 12 weeks, then I flip it on the next due date, then spin, then flip……. Etc. this ensures I use every aspect of the bed evenly though out the year. The cycle continue until the bed needs to be replaced.
